OUR PERSPECTIVES

What Do Voters Care About on the Campaign Trail?

We are officially at the point where candidates have finalized their carefully scripted campaign-trail speeches and are actively talking to voters about key issues. While those issues change every year, here is a short list of issues that seem to be elevated this year on the campaign trail:

Affordability: No surprise here, but affordability is a topic many candidates will be hearing about. From groceries to gas prices, polling shows voters are concerned and want to see more progress. The economy is almost always the top issue for voters, and this year is no different, but affordability is easier to understand, and voters see it firsthand.

Data Centers While this continues to be a local issue, data center policies have become a concern for Congressional candidates, especially those in states where data centers are emerging. This is more messaging than policy at this point, but it certainly is something candidates will hear about.

Congressional LeadershipWith the House and Senate majorities in play, voter questions have emerged about who candidates will support for leadership positions. This is a pretty regular pre-election line of questioning, but something to watch given that candidates are often put in an awkward position where they are forced to either defend current leadership or separate from them before even being elected.

Foreign Policy Between Ukraine, Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, there could be plenty to talk about in the foreign policy space this election season. Both parties have fairly defined positions here, which means that campaigns can feel some political risk or political opportunity when discussing these issues on the campaign trail, but they will certainly be discussed regardless.

This will be an interesting election season with many issues to be debated among the candidates and voters. With policymakers on the campaign trail all of October, many of these topics will be front and center in towns across the country.
