The House Leaves Town...What's Next?

The House of Representatives cut their week short to return to the campaign trail a day early.  Just about everyone will shift their focus to the 2026 election (if they have not already), but outside of the bright lights of the campaign trail, there are consequential moves happening behind the scenes.   

First and foremost, both sides of the political aisle and both ends of the Capitol are planning for various election outcome scenarios, especially around core policy agendas. At the same time, senior policymakers are starting to voice their interest in committee leadership positions, which is expected to rapidly increase in the months ahead.   

Rank-and-file Members of Congress are starting to think about committee moves, hoping to upgrade their own committee assignments. Similarly, policymakers interested in an elected leadership position within House or Senate leadership may be quietly building their own campaigns, which are likely to be announced immediately after the election.   

In short, the election season is also a time for behind-the-scenes planning that helps to manage Congress and the individual party process at the start of the new Congress. While many of these decisions will not be made until early next year, the positioning and "inside baseball" start now so that real movement can happen as soon as everyone knows who will control the House and Senate.    

This is the game many observers miss as all the attention is on the 2026 election.  However, the planning work now will define the 120th Congress.
